PHOTO BY KATE MERCER At Sportplex Mobile, where the month of January is free, fitness director Robyn Choiniere said many of the 40 aerobics classes have been filling up quickly.

She said most people put on about five or seven pounds during the holidays, and are now looking to lose the weight.

Teri Patrick, a 27-year-old from Semmes, walked in at about 11:30 for her first workout of the year. She said her goal was to lose 20 pounds.

"I kind of set this every year," she said. "But I put on some weight last year."

Though other aspects of her life might keep her busy -- she's a working single mother who's also taking nursing classes -- she seemed determined to achieve her goal this year.

"I'm just going to make more time," she said.

She climbed the stairs to a room packed with treadmills, hopped on the one closest to the door, turned on her iPod and took the first steps toward reaching her goal.
